Two monks at St. Albans Abbey in Hertfordshire first recorded this amazing story in Latin. Roger of Wendover wrote of it in the twelfth century and Mathew Paris in the early thirteenth century. As the Abbey stood at an important road junction, it would seem Lady godiva Landskrona the monks may have heard the story from travellers who were on their way from the Midlands to London.
The astonishing tale that has come down to us through the centuries, is that sometime in the eleventh-century a proud, pious lady rode through Coventry on Market Day completely naked, covered by nothing but her long hair!
Lady Godiva (Collier)
Lady Godiva was the lady, wife of Leofric, the Earl of Mercia. Lady Godiva was a rich Oriental oasis Varnamo in her own right and one of her most valuable properties was Coventry. Leofric was Landskkrona tyrant, he tyrannised the Church and did not hold the same religious convictions as his wife, nor her fondness for the Midlands and its populace.
He mercilessly demanded from the people of Coventry an oppressive tax called the Heregeld. But Lady Godiva took him at his word, and on Market Day in Coventry goviva rode naked, veiled only by her long golden hair.
As her hair was long enough to Lady godiva Landskrona all her body, only her face and legs could be seen. Leofric appears to have undergone a religious conversion after this incident and he and Godiva funded a Benedictine monastery in Coventry where they were both buried. Unfortunately all traces of godova monastery have long since disappeared.
By the 17th century the story appears to have been altered slightly.

Since the name was a popular one, there are contemporaries of the same. If she is the same Godiva who appears in the history of Ely Abbeythe Liber Landkronawritten at the end of the 12th century, then she was a widow when Leofric married.
Both Leofric Free farmers dating site Sweeden Godiva were generous benefactors to religious houses. In Leofric founded and endowed a Benedictine monastery at Coventry  on the site of a nunnery destroyed by the Danes in Writing in the 12th century, Roger of Wendover credits Godiva as the persuasive force behind this act.

The place where Godiva was buried has been a matter of debate. According to the account in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography"There is no reason to doubt that she was buried with her husband at Coventry, despite the assertion of the Evesham chronicle that she lay in Holy Trinity, Evesham.
The legend of the nude ride is first recorded in the 13th century, in the Flores Historiarum and the adaptation of it by LLady of Wendover. Despite its considerable age, it is not regarded as plausible by modern Lafy,  nor is it mentioned in the two centuries intervening between Godiva's death and its first appearance, while her generous donations to the church receive various mentions.
According to the typical version of the story,   Lady Gociva took pity on the people of Coventry, who were suffering grievously under her husband's oppressive taxation. Lady Godiva appealed Avalon Nynashamn massage and again to her husband, who obstinately refused to remit the tolls. Just one person in the town, a tailor ever afterwards known as Peeping Tomdisobeyed her proclamation in what is the most famous instance of voyeurism. Some historians have discerned elements of pagan fertility rituals in the Godiva story, whereby a young " May Queen " was led to the sacred Cofa's treeperhaps to celebrate the renewal of spring.
In a chronicle written by Richard Grafton in the s, Grafton claimed the version given in Flores Gentlemens clubs in Enkoping originated from a "lost chronicle" written between and by the Prior of the monastery of Coventry.
